Prosthetic dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry dedicated to making dental prostheses (artificial teeth) for damaged or missing teeth. The word “prosthodontics” comes from the words “prostho” meaning replacement and “dontics” meaning tooth.

To whom are prostheses applied?

Dental prostheses are applied to patients with tooth loss such as tooth decay, tooth fracture or insufficient filling. Dental prostheses are used in cases where the discomfort in the teeth does not heal with treatment.

What are the types of prosthetic teeth?

There are two different types of dental prostheses, fixed and removable:
Fixed dentures are dentures that are prepared in the laboratory and adhered to the teeth using materials similar to the dental tissue and color of missing or excessively lost teeth. Fixed prostheses are generally applied in two ways today as zirconium and laminate restorations.
Removable dentures are also known as dentures. It is a type of prosthetic tooth made of materials such as acrylic, nylon or metal, which fits on the gums and / or remaining teeth, giving the appearance that the patient still has a full set of teeth. There are 4 different types of removable prostheses. These are total dentures, partial dentures, immediate dentures, and implant-supported dentures.
